Scope and Content: Letter regarding plans O’Duffy has for the transfer of 50 men from the detachment of the Dublin Civic Guard to Cork, and the same number from ‘the local Cork Police Force’ to join the Civic Guard in Dublin. O’Duffy had delayed this transfer on account of a conversation with General Dalton in Limerick. In respect of Jerry Murphy, O’Duffy has met with Murphy and they have agreed he cannot serve in Cork however will be appointed to the rank of Inspector in any other county, to be determined.

Scope and Content: Letter of commendation written by Fawsitt in favour of Mr Jerry Murphy, o.c. Cork Civic Guard. Fawsitt vouches Murphy as ‘absolutely loyal to the Provisional Government’ and confirms it was the intention of the late Commander in Chief (Michael Collins) to appoint Murphy to a position under the government.

Scope and Content: Letter thanking Fawsitt for his letter of commendation. Murphy worries he has ‘dam few friends down here’, but then quoting Michael Collins: ‘Let them all come’. Murphy states Collins death is a terrible loss, but he hopes he will ‘guide our destiny from above’. Murphy is expecting officers from the Civic Guard in Dublin to be sent down to Cork to take over command in the coming days and is worried for his job.

Scope and Content: Letter thanking Fawsitt for his help and assistance in ensuring Murphy was appointed inspector in the Civic Guard (Garda Siochana). Murphy hopes to soon be promoted to rank of Superintendent. Murphy also writes to Fawsitt’s own position, stating he has carried out ‘volcanic work for the Government... it is my fervent desire to see you fully recompensed and I trust in the wisdom they won’t let you down’.

Scope and Content: Letter confirming Fawsitt has written to the new Chief of the Civic Guard (Garda Siochana), Eoin O’Duffy. General Liam Tobin has also written on Murphy’s behalf to the Minister of Home Affairs.

Scope and Content: Letter thanking Fawsitt for his congratulations sent on his recent marriage. Murphy writes he was surprised to hear from Fawsitt, ‘as I heard you were again back in New York on State business’. Commenting on how bad events are in Ireland, Murphy asks for Fawsitt’s views on same. Murphy again references Michael Collins, saying: ‘poor Mick what a change his living would have made’.
