Sub-Terms and Page Number Letter from Mary McSwiney with reference to arrests made in Cork, 12/5/1916, pages 386, 387, Reference to the Relief Fund, 12/10/1917, page 587. The growing power of Sinn Fein was obvious and surprised many. The membership and influence of the A.O.H. was in decline, one reason was that public opinion had become disenchanted with the very harsh line which had been taken in the U.S. at the time of the ‘Molly Maguires’, all of whom were innocent and the vacuum was filled with new organisations such as the G.A.A. and the Gaelic League. Letter from Cork County Council enclosing copy of a resolution urging the Government to release the prisoners tried by court-martial in

connection with the recent Rising. They use the term ‘rising’ rather than ‘rebellion’, 26/1/1917, page 481, Cllr. Lane urged, seconded by Cllr. D. Horgan, that the men in Lewis Prison be treated as prisoners of war and not as convicts and that that Countess Markievicz, pending her release from Aylesbury Jail, be accorded the priveleges due to a political prisoner, the resolution was adopted, 27/4/1917, page 517, The Lord Mayor urged the release of all Irish political prisoners, 8/6/1917, page 532, Protest of Cllr. Lane against the brutal treatment of Irish Prisoners of War, 28/9/1917, page 585, Reference to Thomas Ashe, 28/9/1917, page 585
