Committee of Merchants Minute, 1812. In 1812 Britain and Ireland had been at war with France for many years, making cargo ships vulnerable to enemy attack. Sailing in convoy, protected by warships, reduced this risk. The large, sheltered lower harbour at Cork was ideal for gathering convoys and had been used for this purpose since the war against America in the 1770s. This document refers to convoys of ships sailing for the West Indies, Spain and Portugal.(CCCA U401 Cork Butter Market)
