Richard Hare, Merchant, Letterbook 1771-1772. Hare (c1725-1794) was one of Cork’s most prominent merchants in the period 1755 to 1785. He mainly operated as a commission agent procuring provisions such as beef, pork, butter, tallow and hides for export on behalf of English merchants. He similarly accepted provisions such as rum, tea, hops and wood from England and the colonies and sold them on the Irish market, on a commission basis. He shrewdly invested his trading profits in the purchase of estates throughout Munster, the majority of which were inherited by his eldest son William (1751-1837) who became MP for Cork in 1796/97 and the Earl of Listowel in 1822.
