Merchant Princes
Letter to T.J. Clanchy, 1878. The letter from John Murphy, President of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Council of Cork, informed Clanchy that he had been selected as a vice-president of the new Confession of St. Patrick’s. Clanchy and other prominent merchants often were active in charitable organisations. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a Roman Catholic charity, was founded in France in 1833 and was active in Ireland from 1844. Since then it has worked to help the poor.
