St. Mary’s Cemetery, Garrycloyne, Blarney, Co. Cork. 2019 - 2023
INTRODUCTION. The following data was taken from headstones in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Garrycloyne, Blarney, Co. Cork between 2019 and 2023. After 2023, only minor details required attention there. Read in conjunction with the Cork County Council digital burial record when it becomes available, along with positive headstone identification in the cemetery. Headstones or inscriptions added after 2023 are not included here. This was not a financial endeavour and the costs involved were borne by me. The work was done on a casual basis and it completed a long standing interest of mine. No one else was involved. Distance did create difficulties and the work was also interrupted by the Covid -19 travel restrictions as I was not living in the county at that time. The present burial record was accessed by me once regarding a missing headstone. No other record or website was accessed, this was a stand alone exercise. Headstone inscriptions were the main focus of this work, these were photographed and the data transcribed off site. Older headstones also required time consuming site examination in order to determine if possible, what the inscriptions were. Some clearing of overgrowth at headstones was also involved. People known to be buried in the cemetery but who’s names do not appear on headstones, are not recorded here. There can be differences in the spelling of family names and townlands, those given here are what they appear to be on headstones. Headstones at both ends of a grave or plot will appear here on different lines. Where they are not quite in line, they are included in the nearest one. ‘Shared plot’ refers to headstones. In addition to headstones, some original numbered Co. Council grave markers are still in place in area’s A and B. Refer to the digital record when available, for information on those buried in numbered graves. In the older section of the cemetery, grave markers are of uncut stone and are not numbered. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission is denoted here as the CWGC. It owns and maintains the military headstones in the cemetery. Following observations there during the course of this work, I referenced the necessity and potential of local voluntary (summer) involvement in the cemetery with the Cork Co. Archaeologist in May 2023.
