RELATED NEWS and EVENTS * Cholera Epidemic Immigrant mortality on vessels voyaging from Liverpool and Irish ports to New York reached 3% (see also 1849 and 1854). * US shipping competition Maritime Trade. Report in Cork Examiner 19 May 1853 from the Shipping Gazette, which documented the chartering of New York and Boston vessels to ship deals and timber from a British North American port to British ports. Emigrant ships: Thomas Murdoch , Chairman of the Colonial Land and Emigration Commission, reported that American ships were ‘ magnificent vessels’ and that they carried 158,000 of the 175,000 emigrants who sailed from Liverpool to the United States in 1853 . The American success was due to the quality of their vessels and the packet sailing business model with the convenience of regular scheduled sailings. Whether Murdoch should be the absolute arbiter on this topic is left to the reader. The total number of emigrants that sailed from Britain and Ireland in 1853 to the US was 230,885, and to BNA just 34,522.
