* Liverpool, the Main Irish Emigrant Port of Departure. Liverpool had become the port of embarkation for 80% of all New York-bound Irish emigrants by 1846 . The years 1847-51 saw Liverpool’s market share of Irish emigrants drop to approximately 60%, when emigrant ships sailing directly between Ireland and New York increased their passenger share from 5.2% in 1846 to approximately 25% 1847-51 (Tunney & Nugent 2012, 509). Between 1846 and 1851, 77% of all Irish emigrants bound for North America (BNA and the USA) left from Liverpool (Cohn 2009, 132). Although destinations and time periods are slightly different, both statements affirm the importance of the Port of Liverpool during the period of this study.
