Fig. 12: New Orleans Waterfront on the Lower Mississippi. Emigrants voyaging up the Mississippi typically transferred from sailing ships at New Orleans to Mississippi river-style steamboats for such ports as Natchez Mississippi, St Louis Missouri, Dubuque Iowa, Cincinnati Ohio, Wheeler Virginia (W Virginia in 1863), and Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. ************************ New Orleans, at the mouth of the Mississippi, controlled access to the Mississippi River Valley, the Ohio River, and the lower Missouri River Valley. Claims by the brazen ship agents in this case were justified (see Part ll). The 1850 US Census documented 99,071 residents in New Orleans of whom 20.4% were born in Ireland, representing the dominant emigrant group. Irish residents of New Orleans would increase between 1850 and 1860 from approximately 20,210 to 24,308 (Part ll). * California California became the 31 s t State on 9 September 1850 and would experience a significant influx of Irish migrants by 1860. Ireland , which had the third most foreign-born California residents in 1850, would claim the most foreign-born residents in the state by 1860 (1860 USA Census ).
