PART I CALENDAR OF CORK EMIGRANT SHIP SAILINGS 1815-60

Fig. 8: Steamships Nimrod and Athlone Leaving Cork for Liverpool with Emigrants. The Nimrod , built in Liverpool, operated between Liverpool and Cork until wrecked in an 1860 storm travelling to Cork with loss of all twenty-five crew and twenty passengers. * Famine and Increased Emigration Total UK emigrants in 1846 was I29,831 ; distribution: BNA: 33.5%, US: 63%. The Irish component in the UK passenger mix is discussed in Part ll and was approximately 60% on BNA-bound ships and 70% of British and Irish citizens on US-bound ships. Emigrants from Cork in 1846: BNA – 5,683 , USA – 1,383 (McCarthy 2019, 270). Again consistent with this Cork Calendar of Ships for 1846 * The Oregon Treaty (1846) This treaty was signed 15 Jun 1846 between Great Britain and the USA, finally settling the Oregon Territory border dispute along the 49th parallel , with Vancouver Island going to the British and the San Juan Islands in Puget Sound ultimately going to the US. Timing was optimal for the British, since the Americans had been intent on a larger land grab but were quite occupied by the Mexican War of 1846-48. 1847 A-LIST
