Conflicting departure date and destination reports for Nonpareil and George on Cove Ship News. Bank record (EISB) indicated the arrival of Urania at Quebec, rather than St John, from Cork 6 May with emigrants. * Emigration Increase in 1845 While the potato blight was making its way from the east coast of America to Europe, emigration was increasing at a moderate rate from the UK and Ireland. Emigrant departures from the UK: 93,501 ; distribution: BNA: 34%, US: 63%, Australia: minor. Cork became the main emigrant port in Ireland in 1845. BNA: 4,478 , US: 358 (McCarthy, 2019, 270). These statistics are much in line with the voyages in the Cork Calendar of Ships for 1845. * Texas Becomes 28th State A Mexican dispute about the Texas border and the US annexation of Texas , would precipitate a declaration of war ( the Mexican American War 1846-48 ), a one-sided conflict leading to the capture of Mexico City by Major-General Winfield Scott in September 1847. The huge Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo would be concluded 2 Feb 1848, reducing Mexican territory by 55% and ceding to the USA: Texas, California, Nevada, and Utah, as well as parts of present-day Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming (see 1848 below and Part ll).
