Edwin of St John’s Newfoundland sailed for St John New Brunswick 24 Jul with emigrants. Water Witch (schooner, port unknown) arrived at Halifax from St John’s Newfoundland 28 Jul with 9 (Irish) passengers (The Novascotian 1836). * Emigration to Quebec from Cork ‘By 1836 , 20% of Irish emigrants bound for Quebec sailed from Cork, making the southern port the biggest Irish dispatcher of such emigrants’ (McCarthy 2019, 204). * Republic of Texas Declared In 1821 Mexico won its independence from Spain and Mexican Texas was part of the new federalist nation. Texas, being sparsely populated, was so vulnerable to Indian attack and plunder that Mexico encouraged colonization from the US, which eventually produced an American majority. In 1835 the Mexican military was activated to subject all Texas to the centralist government in Mexico City, precipitating the Texas Revolution of 1835 , won by American Texan forces who declared the Independent Republic of Texas in 1836 . 1837 A-LIST
