PART I CALENDAR OF CORK EMIGRANT SHIP SAILINGS 1815-60
* Concern in the US about Welland Canal Competition ‘This important link in the chain of inland navigation will, it is stated by authority of the Directors, be in boatable order by the 15th of May. It offers facilities for transportation deeply prejudicial to the interests of this State. The preparations for diverting trade through that channel have been accelerated by the impolitic increase of tolls on our channels. The merchandize from the seaboard for the Western States, diverted from the Erie Canal at Syracuse, will find a cheaper passage through the Oswego Canal &c. The policy which thus deprives so large a section of the Erie Canal of its legitimate business, must be productive of consequences diametrically opposite to those anticipated by the Canal Board. The experience of the ensuing season, should that policy be persisted in, will, unquestionably, verify this prediction’. Rochester Daily Advertiser (see Section 4) * Indian Removal Act The Indian Removal Act, signed into law by President Andrew Jackson 28 May, authorized grant lands west of the Mississippi for their tribal lands within the states. Between 80,000 and 100,000 members of the Seminole, Creek, Cherokee, Choctaw and Chickasaw, who had occupied valuable property in the Southeast and at times had violent confrontations with intruding white settlers, were cruelly herded westward by flatboats and land routes to inferior property in Oklahoma. Almost a quarter of the victims in this forced migration died. * Port of Quebec Ten-year Mid-Season Report Statement of the number of Ships arrived at Quebec on the 15th of June, between 1821 and 1830, both inclusive, together with their tonnage and the number of settlers: Years Vessels Tonnage Settlers 1821 244 35,615 1,004 1822 254 69,221 3,555 1823 169 41,971 3,635 1824 260 69,097 1,757 1825 272 74,503 4,076 1826 281 76,671 4,242 1827 220 57,537 6,365 1828 253 66,804 5,853 1829 254 71,636 5,689 1830 303 82,095 9,018 1831 A-LIST
