PART I CALENDAR OF CORK EMIGRANT SHIP SAILINGS 1815-60
above Montreal. The canal would run for 126 miles from Bytown (future Ottawa City) on the Ottawa River to Kingston on Lake Ontario and the lock system would raise vessels 83 meters to the Rideau Lakes before descending 50 meters to Kingston. Lieutenant-Colonel John By contracted with a large contingent of Irish labourers in this endeavor. * Philadelphia Passenger Arrivals - M425 (1820s). Few vessels carried emigrants directly from Cork to Philadelphia. However, Liverpool was by far Philadelphia’s main transatlantic trading partner and, while emigrants on those ships were usually portrayed as from Great Britain, the frequency of Irish names suggested a generous number to have been Irish. Particularly interesting was the trade between Philadelphia and Canadian ports. Many Canadian schooners voyaged regularly with Irish emigrants from St John NB, Halifax, and St Andrew to Philadelphia. This St John traffic is also well documented in the 1830s (author). * Timber Market Price Crash of 1826 The spring of 1826 opened with depreciated stocks, glutted markets, and no buyers, and cargoes of lumber sent from St. John to Liverpool did not yield enough to pay the freight. Combined with the Miramichi fire of 1825, New Brunswick offered fewer opportunities at this time (St John timber trade profitability would return by 1828). * Port of Quebec Report.
