Newfoundland at the time of William Cole’s birth possessed a large Irish diaspora and by the 1840s they accounted for 50% of the population of the colony of Newfoundland and Labrador. The fishing industry was the main draw and 90% of the Irish came from within a forty-mile radius of Waterford City (Waterford, Wexford, Cork, Tipperary, and Kilkenny), Historian John Manion.
