Westward Cork Migration by Sail 1815-1860 by John Sutton

PART II EMIGRANT PERSPECTIVE

The importance of Baltimore as a German immigration port is reflected in the 1860 US Census with Maryland the sole eastern state with more foreign-born Germans than Irish. Impact of Irish immigration on Baltimore and Maryland ( 1850 USA Census): Total Population - %Irish - %British - %German - %Foreign-born. Baltimore 165,983 7.3 1.6 11.7 21.4 Maryland 492,666 4.0 1.0 5.5 10.6 German emigrants were predictably the most dominant, in both Baltimore and the State of Maryland. And the percentage of all foreign-born residents was lower than in Pennsylvania, New York State or Massachusetts. Approximately 12,116 Baltimore residents in 1850 were Irish, and 19,420 were German. Further developments between 1850 and 1860 ( 1860 US Census): The Baltimore population grew to 212,418, and the foreign-born Irish residents increased to 15,536 (7.3%), while the German total increased to 32,613 (15.4%). Irish-born residents in Maryland increased by about 5,166 - from approximately 19,706 to 24,872 (5%). It is notable that at the outbreak of the American Civil War Baltimore had 26,000 free Blacks and 2,000 slaves, the former figure accounting for one out of five of all the free blacks in the country (The History of Baltimore, pdf).
