ALL FREEMEN TO PAY GATEAGE TOLLS FOR FIVE YEARS.

2June, 1786. Ordered, that the Mayor, Sheriffs, Ald. Rowland, Kent, Morrison, Mr. Izod, Rowland, and C. S. be a committee to treat with the several tenants of the houses in Castle Street, from the Exchange to the entrance to the Court House, which are proposed to be purchased by the Corporation, and report with whom and for what sums they can purchase. Whereas the Freemen of the City of Corke are by Charter exempted from all Gateage Tolls due to the Mayor, &c., of the City of Corke, and whereas the enlarging of the streets, ways, and passages of the said City a~d suburbs thereof, and the erecting public buildings thereon, will con- tribute as well to the health of the inhabitants as the · beautif~ ing thereof. And whereas the establishing a local tax would be burdensome to the poor, and may eventually not answer, and whereas the Common Council are of opinion that the least burdensome and most effectual means of raising · money will be by enacting a bye-law that all Freemen shall for a limited time be liable to pay all such gateage tolls, as persons not freemen are now subject to and pay, and whereas the gateage tolls paid by persons no~ free- ---~...___. _ ..._.. :-. .. __ r__. men now produce upon an average to the said Mayor, &c., the yearly sum ) of .£1840; Now we, the Mayor, &c., in pursuance of the powers given us by the bye-laws, of making other bye-laws, do enact, &c., that for the space of five years from 29 Sep. next all freemen of said City, and those hereafter admitted during said term, shall be liable to pay all such gateage tolls as persons not freemen now pay, and all money therefrom arising·during said five years, exceeding the sum of £1840, shall be vested in the Commis- sioners for the time being for ma}ring wide and convenient streets, ways, and passages in the City and suburbs, or erecting public buildings as such '·commissioners shall appoint, such direction being first approved of by the C. D. H., after the usual posting, before any money shall be expended, &c. Ordered, that Mr. John Shaw's interest in the dwelling-houses in Castle Street, held by him for the residue of upwards of 900 years, subject to the
