REGULATIONS FIXING THE WAGES OF THE COAL MEASURERS.
Bayonets be lent out of the City Armoury to John Bennett and John Carleton, Esqrs., for the use of a Military Society in the City called the "Innis- "'/" killeners," on their passing their bond for £75 to the Mayor, to return said a~ good order; It., that £7 6s. 11d. be paid John Cuthbert and John Gray for watching the City arms in the Market House from 11 Aug. to 21 Oct. last; It., £5 to James Magrath, half a year's salary for teaching the boys of S. Stephen's Hospital to sing. That Jonathan Ashe, Esq., eldest son of Jonathan A., mercht., dec. ; John Minton, gent., eldest son of John M., mercht., dec.; John Hodder Baily, gent., eldest son of Saml. B., gent.; Thornhill Archer, mercht., having served Geazly Wheeler and Andrew Hill, be admitted freemen at large. Present--Mr. Mayor, Sher. Pick; Alden. Wetherall, Wrixon, Webb,. Travers, Butler, Owgan ; Mr. Browne, Izod, Morrison, and S. Rowland. 19 Nov., 1779. We hereby make the following rules for fixing the wages and regulating the conduct of the Coal Measurers of the City of Corke and liberties thereof, to wit, That the Mayor for the time being shall annually appoint such· number of Coal Measurers as to him shall seem meet to measure coals in and from on board. Every Ship and Vessel which shall arrive in the Harbour of Cork and discharge coals there for sale, to measure all coals sold on the quays in the public coal-yards or in private coal-yards legally licenced, said Coal Measurers shall be annually sworn before the Mayor to do justice between buyer and seller, and to do such other matters as to said Mayor shall appear for the advantage of the Public. That the Mayor shall grant to each of such Coal Measurers a warrant. He shall have power to add to or lessen the number and remove any for insolent behaviour; but for fraud committed the Mayor shall have power to commit to the House of Correction, there to be kept to hard labour for any space of time not exceeding one calendar month. That in case any person shall measure coals from on board any ship who shall not be appointed and sworn by the Mayor, such person shall forfeit for each time he shall so measure coals 20s., to be levied off his goods, &c., half to be paid the prosecutor, the other half to the Governor of the Work House. The Mayor shall have power to fix wages to be paid the said Coal Measurers, and by whom said wages shall be paid, whether by buyer or seller, or equally between both; no other fees to
