18 Aug., 1770. Ordered, that the Gateage tolls, &c., be set to the highest bidder (tolls and terms as before), the persons taking any of the above customs, tolls, or dues shall pay the Town Clerk for drawing the leases and filling the bonds. It., that a convenient Guard house be built on the grotmd at Blackpool granted by Dr. Brocklesby to the Corporation, remainder of said ground to be laid out for a Market, and that Ald. Newman, Philpott, and Mr. Browne be overseers of the work. It., that £50 be paid Ann Sargent, widow and execr. of Ebenezer S., late City overseer, for two years and half salary due said Ebenezer before his decease. It., that the Mayor and Ald. Franklin, with those of the C. D. H., be a committee to build a convenient market on the ground demised to the Cor- poration by Mr. Browne. The report made by Ald. Busteed and Mr. Kent relative to the canal- cutting by Mr. James llorrison being satisfactory, ordered, that Mr. Mayor, :Air. Mayor elect, Alden. Newman, Wetherall, and Maylor be a committee to view said canal and report whether it will be detrimental to the South Channel and rights of the Corporation. It., £6 to Mr. John Wood for one year and half rent of the Guard house at Blackpool; It., 5 guineas to Revd. James Weeks, Corporation Chaplain, for occasional sermons. This day Ald. Franklin, Sher. Kellett, and Mr. Snowe reported that they waited on Dean Chinnery touching the ·encroachment made on the Lough ground, that the Dean answered that he had not designedly taken in any part of the ground, that all he directed his workmen to do was to have his wall built in a straight line, that part of his ground was given, as well as part of the Lough ground taken, by making said line, that he sent for Ebenezer Sargent, City overseer, to attend the striking said line ; and the Dean further answered, that for whatever ground taken in from the Lough he was ready to pay such sum as any two Council shall think the fee simple thereof to be worth, or to take a lease from the Corporation at any rent two Council shall think it to be worth ; ordered, that Ald. Franklin, Sheriff Kellett, and :\Ir. Snowe do get a map of said ground drawn, to know what quantity the Dean has taken in from the J..ough, allowing him for such ground as he has giYen on striking the said line.
