PROPOSALS FOR SWEEPING AND CLEANSING THE STREETS.
to South Gate, Castle Street before the Corn Market, the chair standings and Tuckey's Street (when finished), and George's Street to the new Play House, that they will sweep said streets three times a week at least, and carry away every heap, and for every heap neglected they will subject themselves to a penalty of 2s., and that they will do said work for a sallary of £20 a year, provided they have a lease for seven years, and the place be granted them where the dung is now kept by South Gate to lodge said sweepings in, leaving a passage to the slip and necessary house. That Ald. Wm. Harding be appointed to sweep the street called Mallow Lane from Newgate to Hilgrove's house, and that he may dispose of said sweepings as he shall think proper, provided he carry away every heap as soon as swept up. Present-Mr. Mayor, Sher. Fitton and Morrison ; Alden. Jackson, Owgan, Crone, Wrixon, Harding, Philpott, Wetherall, Reily, Bury, and Mr. Clark, Jun., C. S. 21 July, 1762. This day Mr. Willm. Willcocks, C. S., was sworn to keep the secrets of the Council. That William Austen, gent., eldest son of Thomas A., dec., be admitted a freeman at large. That £12 7s. 9d. be paid John Martin, gunsmith, for repairing part of the Militia arms; It., £10 2s. 6d. to Christopher Woods, gunsmith, for repairing part of do. That Ald. Wm. Harding be empowered to seize all dung that shall be left in the public streets and lanes from Newgate to Hillgrove's house in the North Suburbs. I ....-..,._... That the Mayor provide an entertainment at Blackrock on first W ednes- . day in Aug. next, pursuant to annual custom. / That £116s. 2d. be paid Mr. Henry Rugge, expenses of a breakfast by ~im prepared at the Council Chamher on the day of the Proclamation of the war against Spain. That Roger Gulden, Mason and Paver, proposed and that he will new pave the Main Street from gate to gate between the two Gaols, also the Gate houses of the North and South Bridges, as far as the iron grates at the end of same at 3 pence the square yard, and keep same in repair for seven years
