CORK HARBOUR TO BE FORTIFIED.
Present--Mr. Mayor, Sheriffs Foord and Bruce, Mr. Recorder; Alden. At- kins, Millerd, Austin, Croker, Jackson, Fuller, Owgan, Winthrop, W estrop, and R. Newenham, C. S. 26 Oct., 17 45. Mr. Pigott, one of our representatives, having by letter informed the Mayor that a motion had been made in the House of Commons, to inform them that next Wednesday it would be proposed to provide such a number of arms as may be thought necessary to put the kingdom into a proper defence, and that the House would take into consideration the defence- less condition of the Towns and Garrisons of this Kingdom, and that he thought it his duty to put the House in mind that the Harbour of Corke was entirely open to an enemy, and that as the securing" of it might be of the utmost consequence not only to Ireland but to Great Britain, he hoped they would consider how it may be effectually secured. Mr. Mayor on re- ceipt of said letter convened the Council and consulted with several mer- chants on the subject, who all agree it will be of service to the public, and conduce to the safety of this harbour and the Kingdom in General, to have a fortification built on some convenient place within this harbour, under proper regulations not injurious to trade. Ordered, that Mr. Mayor be de- sired to write the sentiments of thi.1:4 board to Mr. Pigott. Present--Mr. Mayor, Sher. Bruce, Mr. Recorder; Alden.
