308 FREEMEN OF THE CITY OF BRISTOL TO PAY DUTY ON FOREIGNERS' GOODS.
Present-Mr. Mayor, both Sheriffs; Alden. Crofts, Chartres, Renew, French, Goddard, Whiting ; Mr. Walker, Mr. Perrie, Mr. Browne.
4 Sep., 1704. Whereas several persons free of the City of Bristol do enter the goods of foreigners and pay no petty duties by reason of their priviledge, ordered, that Mr. Lumly do not admit such persons to pass any goods free of petty duties but such as by oath before the Mayor make it appear they are their own or bought by them on commission, and do the like to all freemen where he shall have cause to suspect they enter foreigners' goods. Present-Mr. Mayor, both Sheriffs; Alden. French, Roberts, Goddard, Morris, Whiting ; Mr. Perrie, Mr. Browne, Mr. Walker. 23 Sep., 1704. Ordered, that Mr. Francis Healy be admitted free, paying 20s. That Wm. Barry shall enjoy the hole under the walls near the gate for one year, at lOs. per annum. . mar1ne That the customs of the gates and markets be put to cant on Thursday morning, the standings in the street to be excepted and received in kind by such officer as the Mayor and Council shall appoint. At the same time, the timber taken out of the bridges be also put to cant. That Mr. Mayor be paid 50li., besides what was paid for the wine, for his entertaining Lieut.-Gen. Earle. and his Gen. Officers at their last being here. Present-Mr. Mayor, ~her. Smith; Alden. Rogers, Chartres, Crone, Renew, Love, Roberts, Goddard, Morris, Whiting ; Mr. Walker, Mr. Perrie, Mr. Browne. 14 Oct., 1704. For the ease of the inhabitants of this City it is ordered, that the pave- ment of the great street from the North and South gate between the two gutters be put in repair, and that Ald. Crone, Alden. Chartres, Goddard, and Whiting appoint how the same shall be mended for this winter, till the season be fit to new pave the same.
