EXPENSES OF l'HE ACT FOR CLEANSING THE CHANNEL TO BE PAID.

9 Feb., 1703. Put to the vote, what should be done upon the Compiaint of 1\.fr. Han- cock, for being arrested in this City upon a warrant from Thomas Farren, Esq., in a cause alledged not cognizable in that court ; carried, that the Mayor should state the case to Councillor Gallwey, and advise with him, consulting the Charter, and act accordingly. Present-Mr. 1\.fayor, both Sheriffs; Alden. Crofts, Crone, Chartres, Roberts, Goddard, 1\.forris, Whiting; Common Speaker, Mr. Walker, Mr. Browne. 15 Feb., 1703. Ordered, that a letter be written by the 1\.fayor to the Secretary of State about the business of Mr. Fan·en's arresting Mr. Hancock and desire that nothing may be further done therein till the Solicitor General, being our Recorder, have time after the present hurry to discourse the matter and show him the right, also to let him know that this matter has been con- stantly insisted on by the City and the Judge of the Admiralty has acquiesced. Present-Mr. Mayor, both Sheriffs; Alden. Baily, Crofts, Chartres, Love, Roberts, Goddard; Mr. Walker, Mr. Browne. 13 March, 1703. Upon reading Mr. Webber's letter to the Mayor, signifying the draft of a Bill of Slli. 6s. Sd., on account of passing the act for cleansing the channel of this City, ordered, that the Chamberlain do pay the same as the bill shall fall due. Ordered, that the Chamberlain pay unto Mr. Sher. Browne the sum of Bli. 3s. 5d., his and Michrel Morland's charges in going to Dublin upon the parliamentary summons against the Sheriff and Serjeant-at-arms against the Bayliffe. Upon reading the petition of Mr. Abraham Morris and his joynt tenant, It is ordered, that they have liberty to build a stone bridge over the river, from the Marsh they hold eastward of Selwood's dock to and in the slip between Mr. Dunscombe's and Mr. Finche's ground, building same at their 39
