298 T. HODDER TO HAVE A LEASE OF T. CROOK'S GROUND AT SOUTH BRIDGE.

Present-Mr. Mayor, both Sheriffs ; Alden. Crone, Chartres, Renew, Love, French, Roberts, Morris; 1\1r. Francklyn, Common Speaker; Mr. Perrie, Mr. Champion, Mr. Browne. 7 May, 1703. Forasmuch as Mr. Thomas Crook made it appear that he could not enjoy the premises at the South end of the South Bridge, which his father and he held from the Corporation at 3 pounds per annum, since the beginning of the late War, in which the houses built thereupon were burnt to ashes, the works being erected thereon, and since they were erazed he could not im- prove thereon by reason of the shortness of the term, for which reason, and for that said Crook was ready to surrender hi~ lease, of which three years are yet undetermined, It is thought fit said surrender be accepted and Crook discharged of all arrears. In order the better to dispose of the ground on both sides the South end of the South Bridge, formerly held by Mr. Thomas Crook, It is ordered, that Ald. William Chartres, Ald. James French, Ald. Wm. Goddard, and the Common Speaker do view the same, take the dimensions, and state thereof, and make their report. Upon the offer of Mr. Thomas Hodder, Esq., to take a lease of that part of the ground on the west side of the south end of the South Bridge, formerly held by Mr. Tho. Crook, or to sell said Hodder's part which he purchased from the Trustees of the Forfeited Estates, at 45 pounds ster., or to buy the Corporation part at a proportionable value, It is agreed between the Mayor, &c., and said Hodder,. that the Corporation will pay him 45 pounds for his part of the premises, he making over to the Corporation the premises as fully as same is granted to him by said Trustees. Pursuant to order of 13 March, ordered, that the City Chest be fitted with locks and keys and lodged at Ald. Crone's house, that the several ChaTters, leases, Bonds, &c., be put therein, and the keys kept one by the Mayo!', another by the eldest Alderman, a third by the eldest Sheriff, and a book cont31ining heads of all the deeds, &c., which shall be deposited in the chest be kept in the Town Clerk's office for use, as the assembly may require; that Ald. James French, Ald. Wm. Roberts, Ald. Wm. Goddard, Ald. Theo. l\1orris, and Mr. Sher. Masters see to this order.
