AN ADJUTANT APPOINTF.D TO lNSTIWCT THE MILITIA.

27 Feb., 1702. Whereas there hath been an ancient custom time out of miud 1 for the Mayor of this City to nominate a freeman, which while great fines were paid for the·freedom. thereof, was bestowed as a perquisite to the Mayor, and as since by the late act for encouragement of Protestant strangers, the freedom is to be purchased for 20s., by means whereof, to gratify several of the precedent Mayors, some persons not qualified have been admitted, for prevention of which for the future it is agreed as a standing Bye-law, that from henceforth the custom be laid aside and the priviledge granted to the Mayor taken away, and in lieu thereof the present 1\fayor and his successors shall receive out of the puhlic revenue the sum of 5 pou.nds over and above his and their sallary. Present-Mr. Mayor, both Sheriffs ; Alden. Crofts, Crone, Chartres, Renew:, French, Roberts, Goddard ; Mr. Perrie, Mr. Browne. 29 April, 1703. Wherea.s at an assembly held 30 Sep., 1701, the militia of this City being by order of the government to be then raised and settled, It was thought necessary that there should be an Adjutant for instructing and exercising the men, &c. Now, as it appears John Hall, gent., has beeu chosen, and. is commissioned Adjutant of the said militia, and had on all occasions acted as such, It is ordered, that the Chamberlain pay said John Hall 9li. 28. Gd., half year's sallary due to him. Application being made by Thomas Hodder, Esq_., for the taking to farm. from this Corporation their interest (being a moyety thereof) in a piece of ground at the South West end of South Bridge, he having Lought the other moiety from the trustees, being forfeiture of Arthur Gallway or Ignatius Goold, which premises, with others, are at present in the tenancy of Mr. Thoma~ Crook, by a lease from this Corporation (or a te1m yet undetermined, . . out of'wJuch there is a great arrear of rent due from said Crook, whereupon it is thought fit, before any answer be given to Mr. Hodder, Mr. Crook be discoursed with, and therefore a Council is ordered to be called on li'riday, 7 May, at which time Crook is desired to appear and account for his arreares of rent, and to settle that affair. ;)8
