27 Jctn., 1695. Ordered, that the rent due out of the Spittle lands from the tenants since 25 lfarcb, 1691, be called in by the Chamberlain, to be paid in a week from that day, or due course of law be taken to compel them. That Ald. Ballard haT"e a lease of the King's Old Castle for 21 years, at a yearly rent of 40s., half-yearly to be paid. The Corpor-ation to have the liberty of election of )!ayors therein, as formerly; to be put now in repair and kept by Ald. Ballard; and that if )1r. ''ill. Roberts and lli. Thomas Browne shall think convenient to keep up the Lanthorn, then Ballard shall put same in repair. That lir. Thomas Browne draw a letter to be signed by the Mayor and Sheriffs, directed to the Recorder, in answer to his about the Spittle lands, that it is the sense of this Corporation, if Baron ''orth will perfect a deed (advised by the Recorder and .Attorney-General, whom we fee) relinquishing all right or title to .the Priorship of the Hospital of S. Stephens, or lands thereunto belonging, by reason of passing patent for same, "ithout declaring any trust, the same shall be received by us ; or if the Baron refuse, then a bill in Chancery be filed against him, and an instrument under the City seal be giT"en, irupowering lli. Edward Richardson to act therein. Ordered, that .Alden. Xewenham, Ballard, and Crofts, Mr. Browne and Mr. Roberts, or any three of them, audit the accounts of lli. Perrie, the Chamberlain, for three years past, and report at next Council, also the accounts of Ald. Crone and Ald. Chartres. Ordered, that the llayor agree with the Sexton of Chric;t Church for ringing the eight and four o'clock bell, and what he shall do therein to be paid at the Corporation charge. Ordered that ..!.braham Mott be admitted the Mayor's Freeman. Ordered, that the part of the Spittle lands formerly in the occupation of John Cornish be set unto John Rift for 3 years from 25 llarch, 1696, at a yearly rent of 40 pounds ster.7 to be paid half-yearly without any defalcation by him on account of the works of Fortification, and that 30 pounds be taken from him in full satisfaction for the sheaf of said land by him held from 25 )!arch, 16~.3, tmto 25 liru·cb, lti~)l).
