Scope and Content: Denis writes to express his gratitude at receiving Daniel's letter last month, that he thanks Daniel as a member of the MacCarthy Sept for shining a light on their history, and he believes that there is little chance of recreating the ancient chieftainship of the MacCarthy Reagh due to the current Irish political climate. He would also be happy to help distribute Daniel's book to other MacCarthys in Ireland if possible.

Scope and Content: This series of letters offers an invaluable insight into the close friendship of Daniel and Denis and the trials and tribulations of Denis' life. It appears that Denis and Daniel's correspondence began when Daniel sent Denis a copy of 'The Life and Letters of Florence MacCarthy Reagh ...', and continued for more than a decade. The closeness of their friendship is illustrated by Daniel's dedication to Denis in his book 'A Historical Pedigree of the Sliochd Feidhlimidh, the MacCarthys of Gleannacroim' [29 March 1875]. Denis helped to source and transcribe manuscripts for Daniel's research [31 July and 8 September 1873], and introduced Daniel to many of the other correspondents in the collection, often by sending them copies of books on Daniel's behalf [23 October 1867]. The letters frequently include updates regarding Denis' personal life and family, such as: the death of his wife Elizabeth Mary [see letter dated 17 October 1874]; the deaths of his daughters Lillie and Josephine [25 December 1873]; Denis being injured in a gas explosion [12 October and 31 December 1870; see also letter from Elizabth Mary MacCarthy to Daniel dated 1 October 1870]; Denis' bouts of depression [27 December 1871 and 16 November 1872]; Denis' struggles to find employment and support his family [3 April 1868], and his unsuccessful application for a job at the Public Record Office of Ireland [3 March 1870]. Some of Denis' notable friends mentioned in the letters include William Wilde and Samuel Ferguson [22, 23 and 27 October 1867], James Joseph MacCarthy [3 April 1868], William Charles Bonaparte- Wyse [28 June 1870], John Mitchel [17 September 1875], and Walter Savage Landor [18 January 1877].
Denis and Daniel frequently exchange books, and Denis often discusses his current research,
