Daniel MacCarthy Glas Collection- Descriptive List

Descriptive list of the Daniel MacCarthy (Glas) Collection

Macartney writes that he has only just opened Daniel's letters dated 30 August, 2 and 12 September 1870, having been away and the letters were never forwarded onto him. He reminds Daniel that his letter dated 12 September 1870 expressed his desire to continue with the attempt to elect a chieftain for the clan for "at least one year longer." He tells Daniel that he is due to travel to Seaport, Bushmills [County Antrim] and that Daniel is welcome to visit him there. He suggests that William Reeves may also be able to join them.

Scope and Content: Macartney says that he has only just received Daniel's letter now on his return to Dublin. He notes that his son was ill but is now "entirely himself again." He thanks Daniel for the honour which he proposes "conferring upon me, [but] I deem myself undeserving of it. I have done little if anything to stir or promote Irish nationality ..." Macartney suggests others ("Mr Maguire ... Mr Sullivan") who would be more deserving of the distinction.
