Scope and Content: Macartney sends Daniel research notes from his recent visit to the library of Trinity College Dublin [included]. He mentions that he heard from "Connolly the old book seller of Ormond Quay [Dublin]", that Denis Florence MacCarthy "the Bard" is interested in Daniel's attempts to "identify the Macartneys with the MacCarthys".

Scope and Content: Macartney discusses his family pedigree, and says he was speaking to JJ McCarthy "the architect" who hailed the prospect of Daniel's visit to Ireland. He mentions J McCarthy [see letter dated 7 March 1870] and suggests that Daniel might ask why he distrusts "a co-religionist? I reply to such a query, that the canker of Protestantism has almost invariably destroyed any clan into which it had entered."
