Title:

Letters between J McCarthy, Listowel [County Kerry] and George T Macartney, 6

Hatch Street [Dublin], and a letter from George T Macartney to Daniel MacCarthy. Level: file Extent: 4 letters [3pp, 3pp, 1p and 1p], 1 newspaper cutting, and 1 note [2pp] Part of: PR70/B Scope and Content: Macartney writes to Daniel, enclosing a letter from J McCarthy, Listowel [dated 2 March], a copy of the letter, and a copy of his reply [dated 7 March]. Macartney says J McCarthy is a Protestant who "takes a great interest in the movement". J McCarthy writes that they may have to delay the consecration of the new MacCarthy Mór, as the Bishop of Kerry, David Moriarty is currently in Rome. He also cautions that the "present almost unprecedented state of things in portions of the country, as regards agrarian outrage, murder etc might render the time unfavourable for a movement which however peaceful might create some little excitement." It appears that Macartney also enclosed a newspaper cutting [included] from the Freeman's Journal dated 2 March 1870, which Daniel received from Denis Florence MacCarthy. Macartney returns the cutting with a note saying that it "deserves your custody". The cutting relates to a report that Etenne Stanislaus O'Dunlevie, a native of Poland, has arrived in Dublin to claim possession of estates which formerly belonged to his ancestors in counties Down and Antrim.

Scope and Content: Macartney uses most of his letter to quote a section from a recent article in the ninth volume of the Ulster Journal of Archaeology concerning the history of the Macartneys. The article states that the "idea of identifying the Macartneys with the MacCarthys in not supported as far as we know by any genealogical facts but has arisen from the apparent similarity of their names."
