Scope and Content: Macartney encloses a letter [dated 20 September] from George MacCarthy "an officer of the Royal Irish Constabulary" with his letter to Daniel [dated 24 September]. In it, George MacCarthy asks "in what way it is proposed to celebrate the 'Centenary'" [1870 would mark 100 years since the death of the last MacCarthy Mór (Charles) in 1770]. MacCarthy also mentions that Captain Herbert of Muckross, is "at present the possessor of the MacCarthy Mor estates ..."

Scope and Content: Macartney thanks Daniel for his sympathies following the death of his father, George Hume Macartney [died 20 October 1869]. He encloses one of the memorial cards which were circulated at the funeral. He tells Daniel that he is travelling to London that night and that his address while there will be the Army and Navy Club, Pall Mall, London.

Scope and Content: Macartney replies to Daniel's letter of 26 November 1869, and thanks him again for his sympathies. He says he is delighted to hear of Daniel's proposed visit to Ireland "as that makes it almost a matter of certainty that we shall at length meet." He agrees with Daniel that "had our project of a revived chieftainship succeeded ... it would have added a feature to the land agitation and I therefore much regret our voice is mute."

Louis Lain é , author of 'Archives g é n é alogiques et historiques de la noblesse de France' which includes a section on the MacCarthys] to Daniel, "whom I have wrapped to save him from hurt during his journey to you" [see item PR70/H/8]. He discusses a letter that Daniel received from a man in Queenstown [Cobh, County Cork] "some months ago deprecating the movement as imperious to the Land Question ..." He also notes that the General Convention of the Church of Ireland is being held soon, and that he is
