Scope and Content: [Undated letter] Macartney apologises for the delay in replying to Daniel, saying that he was summoned to "Hombourg by Frankfurt on the Maine" [sic] to be with his father who is seriously ill. He has brought his father to Ostend [Belgium] in the hopes of travelling across the channel to his sister's house in London but the sea is currently too rough. He suggests meeting Daniel in London, noting that his club is the Army and Navy Club, Pall Mall. He again says that he would be unsuitable for the chieftainship, adding that though he has "the name of large means, [he is] in reality neither rich now or in prospect hereafter, [his] father having incurred large liabilities."
