Daniel MacCarthy Glas Collection- Descriptive List

Descriptive list of the Daniel MacCarthy (Glas) Collection

Part of:

PR70/B

Scope and Content: Letter is incorrectly dated 1868. Macartney disagrees with Daniel that his age would make him an unsuitable candidate for chieftain. He quotes from a letter he received from John McCarthy of Rathduane Manor [County Cork], in which McCarthy refers to Daniel as "a most worthy person". Macartney agrees with Daniel's view of the letter to the editor published in the 'Dublin Evening Mail' [see letter dated 31 December 1868] and thinks it "harmless only by its insignificance."

Scope and Content: Macartney notes that he began writing the letter on 11 January, and finished it on 13 January. He says that he has written to John McCarthy of Rathduane Manor [see letter dated 2 January 1869] stating his conviction that Daniel should be elected chieftain for "the services [he] had rendered the sept by the publication of 'The Life [and Letters of Florence MacCarthy More]'. He mentions that the O'Conor Don, 'the Prince of Coolavin', the O'Donoghue, the O'Donovan are "not complete chieftains ... they have assumed the title of their tribes without public sanction ..."

Scope and Content: Macartney writes that Daniel's torpour [sic] may arise from their fellow sept members being "so selfish as to be contented with the sept remaining headless rather than that any one should be exalted over them." He disagrees with the opinion of Dr MacCarthy "of Maynooth" and Daniel, that he would be eligible for the chieftainship. He argues that he is ineligible due to being "but a half blood i.e. by female descent, of a subtribe, the Macartneys", and because he is "not of the clan church" [Roman Catholic]. He mentions that he has 20 volumes of unpublished letters which were sent to his father's grand uncle, "Lord Macartney" [George Macartney (1737 – 1806)] between 1768 and 1801.
