Scope and Content: Macartney writes that he does not think JJ McCarthy would be a good canvasser for the chieftainship as "he would fear ridicule." Macartney has heard of "the very man we want" for MacCarthy Mor. He says the candidate has a brother who is a cornet in 14th Hussars, and he should be able to contact this brother through Macartney's distant cousin who is the paymaster in the 14th Hussars.

George T Macartney. Level: Item Extent: 4pp Part of:

Scope and Content: Daniel reassures Macartney that when it comes time to appeal to members of the sept in the south of Ireland, JJ McCarthy will be "quite willing to do all he may be able with the priests to whom he is so well, and favourably known." Daniel reiterates his opinion that a more suitable candidate for the chieftainship other than himself, would be a "much younger person with a fortune". He suggests again that Macartney consults with Denis Florence MacCarthy and JJ McCarthy about this.

George T Macartney. Level: file Extent:

1 letter (6pp), 1 newspaper cutting

Part of:

PR70/B

Scope and Content: Six-page letter with most of two pages crossed out. Daniel responds to a newspaper cutting which Macartney has sent him, featuring a letter to the editor printed in the 'Dublin Evening Mail' newspaper [included] written by a "Q.E.D." The letter to the editor refers to the readers of the newspaper as "Irish landowners", saying that they may not be gratified to learn that a "movement now exists for the purpose of resuscitating the septs ... no doubt with the view of claiming a restitution of the lands once occupied by the clan." Daniel writes to Macartney that "what most concerns us is the effect [Q.E.D.'s letter] is likely to produce in the minds of the few gentlemen of our sept on whose cooperation we mainly depend for the carrying to happy issue the project which I believe to be the noblest, and most national that has been thought of for centuries."
