Descriptive list of the Daniel MacCarthy (Glas) Collection

Macartney sends Daniel a photograph of himself as promised [not included], writing that it was taken in 1864 when he was walking his "Irish circuit" of 1230 miles. He also mentions that he met Dr Daniel MacCarthy, Professor of Biblical Theology and Hebrew in Maynooth University [County Kildare] yesterday.

Two copy letters written on the front and back of a single piece of paper. The first letter is dated 27 November 1868 [?from G Macartney, (likely the Captain G Macartney of copy letter dated 2 December 1868, see below)] to George T Macartney, while the second letter is dated 2 December 1868 from George T Macartney to "Mr MacCarthy". In the first letter Captain Macartney writes that he hopes to meet George T Macartney in Dublin very soon, and in the second letter, George T Macartney writes "now that the elections are over and fresh [?excitement] needed[,] Clan [MacCarthy] should supply it."

Macartney clarifies to Captain G Macartney that he does not think it would be appropriate for a Macartney to be elected chief of the MacCarthy clan, except under "very peculiar circumstances which in this case do not exist." He also believes that the chief should belong to the "church of Rome", and his choice of candidate is Daniel MacCarthy (Glas). He also mentions that the Bishop of Kerry has "offered to consecrate the chief".

Scope and Content: Two copies of the letter. Daniel writes that a more suitable candidate for the chieftainship other than himself, would be a "wealthy youth … a person more likely in estimation of our countrymen". That said, he is "also ready, if obstacles are in the way of a fitter choice, to serve my sept in any way that I may be thought competent to do so." He suggests that Macartney consults with Denis Florence MacCarthy and JJ McCarthy about this.
