Scope and Content: Macartney returns JJ McCarthy's letter to Daniel [letter not included] saying he approves of it, and plans to visit JJ [in Dublin] on Saturday. He discusses Donal McCarthy "who settled in Scotland, time of Robert [the] Bruce", and how he has seen old documents in which [?McCarthney] stands for Macartney.

Scope and Content: Macartney writes that he visited JJ McCarthy and their views "coincided". He says he called to four other MacCarthys/McCarthys and "advocated our want and met with favourable replies with one exception – a Protestant from Kerry." He forwards a letter from Robert Macartney from County Antrim, who is the son of a small farmer and works as a "land surveyor and valuator", noting that he thinks it "well to obtain the opinions of poor as well as rich." He asks Daniel to return the letter [a copy made by Daniel is included with this file].

Scope and Content: Macartney thanks Daniel for his very kind invitation, but says he is obliged at this time to be in Ireland. He thinks their "programme" [to elect a MacCarthy Mor] is "progressing fairly if not rapidly and Mr JJ [McCarthy's] visit to Kerry will do good." He encloses a letter [not included] from "Mr Ellison Macartney" [John Ellison-Macartney (1818-1904)], which he says "does not look favourable, however it is well to see all opinions both for and against [MacCarthy Mor]."
