Scope and Content: Macartney thanks Daniel for the information he has shared with him, and encloses an extract from the Ulster Journal of Archaeology [not included] relating to the election of a chief of the McNaughtens. He discusses the Macartneys' claim of being related to the MacCarthys, which he acknowledges some deny, and goes on to outline his descent from the first Macartney of Lissanoure.

Scope and Content: Macartney returns Daniel's proposed address for Clan Carthy [not included]. He suggests sending a circular letter to all the MacCarthy Catholic priests in Munster to ascertain the number of MacCarthys in the south, and then to do the same in England, Scotland and America. He suggests that the chief of the clan should be a resident in Munster, and that an annual assembly of the clan would be held in his house. He encloses a transcript of an article by [?George] Hill from the Ulster Journal of Archaeology relating to the MacNaghtens and the MacNeils.

Scope and Content: Macartney sends Daniel a list of the 72 MacCarthys and McCarthys included in that year's 'Thom's Directory of Ireland', suggesting a circular should be sent for canvassing their opinion "respecting the election of a chief". Macartney notes that the list includes both Roman Catholics and Protestants clergy, "barristers, attorneys, medical men ... residents in Dublin both in and out of trade".
