Scope and Content: Macartney suggests that Daniel turns his "attention to the settlement of Ulster as I am sure the result would be a work equally interesting as the one you have just given the public." He tells Daniel that there is a "large mass of McDonnell family papers in the gate house of Glenarm Castle, County Antrim and I have been told the Earl of Antrim is willing to let these be investigated."

Scope and Content: Macartney refers to the McDonnell papers mentioned in his previous letter of 23 July and says he "has heard (what I hope may be untrue) that the Earl of Antrim has destroyed a quantity of family papers". He asks if Daniel is aware of a reproduction of John Goghe's map of Ireland of 1567 which includes the names and localities of the Irish septs then existing. He ends the letter with the suggestion that "Clan Carthy should be canvassed with a view of electing 'McCarthy [sic] Mor.'" A note written at the bottom of the page by Daniel MacCarthy (Glas) reads: "This suggestion has been the origin of the move as to the restoration of the chieftainship."
