Descriptive list of the Daniel MacCarthy (Glas) Collection

Scope and Content: Lyons writes that he attended the recent funeral of Father Hurley, and saw Daniel's books in Hurley's house. He suggests that Daniel gets in touch with the executor of Father Hurley's estate regarding the books. He again discusses the "prophecy", mentioned in his letter dated 20 February 1874, and how he originally heard it from his mother.

Lyons discusses the etymology of the Irish word for "greedy". He also discusses Daniel's books which were in possession of the late Father Hurley, and says he hopes that the new parish priest will establish a parish library. He then answers Daniel's query regarding the period in which [?Doinnall- na-Tuille] lived.

Lyons writes that Canon Casey "of the Cathedral" has been appointed Parish Priest of Dunmanway [following the death of Father Hurley]. Lyons says that Casey "has no library tastes, and is not of your way of thinking." Lyons hopes Casey will set up a parish library if the bishop suggests it. He also mentions that he is to be moved to a new parish soon.

Lyons writes that he would prefer to stay in his current parish rather than be promoted to another which he describes as a "leap in the dark". He sends Daniel a translation of four verses of the caoine [keen] and asks if he can be acknowledged if Daniel publishes them. He notes that he saw [?the MacCarthy] monument in Dunmanway church and that a few priests who were with him thought it "out of place".
