Descriptive list of the Daniel MacCarthy (Glas) Collection

Lyons writes that his previous letter was written in haste, and that he took poetic licence when translating some verses in Irish, which he corrects.

Lyons thanks Daniel for the copy of Donal-na-Tuille's caoine [keen] of Tadhgan Duna and discusses the date of his death, and translates several of the passages from Irish to English. He discusses manuscripts of John Collins of Myross, which he suspects are now in the possession of Phil Donovan of Union Hall, and Dr Murphy of Maynooth. He also discusses Justin MacCarthy's descendants, and the possibility of a photographer visiting the locality to capture "many of the interesting objects to be met with here."

Lyons writes regarding a translation of an Irish caoine [keen] which Daniel sent him, and says it is a "mess … from beginning to end". He goes on to discuss the caoine in great detail, translating passages and explaining the people and places mentioned.

Lyons discusses the possibility that the traditions of Charles Glas may still linger in Gleann-a-chroim, and that he hopes to converse with locals around Togher about them, but that the delay might be too much for the information to be included Daniel's book. He mentions a local "prophecy" that there will be war in the country when "a coach without horse shall pass through Gleanndaw westward", which he believes signifies the arrival of the new railway to west Cork.
