Descriptive list of the Daniel MacCarthy (Glas) Collection

she was writing to him in 1879 as she discusses his story, 'The Memorial Window'. She mostly discusses her immediate family: her husband William Burton Leslie; her son [from her first marriage] Captain Horace Townshend; her daughter-in-law, Joanna Poole [Horace's wife]; and her grand- daughter, Florence [Essie] Townsend, who also corresponded with Daniel. It seems that Daniel sent Jane and Essie Townshend several stories he had written, and that Daniel read some of Horace Townshend's "prose and verse". The letters include mentions of the Great Famine [26 May], MacCarthy tombs in Timoleague and Kilcrea abbeys, and the recollections of a Mrs Sealy of Burren House, Courtmacsherry of the "old MacCarthy coming over from Spain every year" [23 April].

Scope and Content: The representative writes that Lord Lonsdale sends his thanks to Daniel for his letter and the copy of 'The Life and Letters of Florence MacCarthy Reagh'.

Lyons writes that he regrets not making Daniel's acquaintance when he visited Togher and Dunmanway, and that he can help with Daniel's inquiries into the MacCarthys of Gleann-a-Chroim. He includes a verse about Tadhg-an-Duna in Irish, and describes his own family history in connection to Togher Castle. Thereafter, Father Lyons writes a detailed family history of several MacCarthy family members, and says that he is now the Roman Catholic Curate of Iveleary Parish.

Scope and Content: Lyons thanks Daniel for his gift and letter, and includes a poem in Irish (and an English translation) about Tadhg an Duna. He describes the genealogy of his own mother and father, and mentions noticing a mistake in Daniel's book regarding the etymology of Gleann-a-Chroim. Lyons recommends that Daniel speaks to the "Ould Root" [Eugene MacCarthy] of Dunmanway who calls himself a MacCarthy Glas, but notes that the cognomen Glas is common to several families in the parish, and mentions the Leary Glas family as an example.
