Descriptive list of the Daniel MacCarthy (Glas) Collection

Scope and Content: Keleher writes that the Barrys pay £18 annual rent to Sir J Hoore [?Sir Joseph Wallis O'Bryen Hoare] for the lands of Togher Castle. He says that the stone mason, Patrick McCarthy, measured and assessed the condition of the castle and encloses his report and plan of the building. He also mentions that the late General Shuldham's sons live at Coolkellure "amongst the mountains in what I may term a decent farm-house."

Scope and Content: Keleher writes that he visited the agent of Dr Barry in Cork, and that Miss Barry has a life interest in Togher Castle which would pass to her brother, Dr Barry, on her death. Keleher recommends that Daniel engages a solicitor, William O'Keeffe "who resides on the South Mall or rather whose office is there", to assist with the matter.

Keleher writes to Daniel concerning the results of his research into the Government Valuations for the current property price of the Togher lands. He says the property of the Barry family is 661 acres and is valued at £207 pounds and 4 shillings. Keleher says that he did not pay the mason, Patrick McCarthy, as he did not expect to be paid for the work and is employed by Keleher on a regular basis to repair churches and schools.

Scope and Content: Keleher apologises for the delay in replying to Daniel's letter and acknowledging receipt of £1 for "Eleanor's boys". He says the older boy is possibly not suited to school "and in consequence may have to depend on the labours of his hands for means of subsistence." Keleher tells Daniel that there is no habitable house on the Togher lands, but he may be able to rent a house on Lord Carbery's Estate, within a mile of Togher Castle. He says that he visited the castle recently and that there "is not a more salubrious spot in Ireland than Dunmanway."
