Scope and Content: Gosling writes that their "worst fears have been realised - poor Rico breathed his last before 8 o'clock on Sunday morning the 5th last." Gosling praises the care given to Rico by Colonel Simpson ["one of his oldest friends"] and Doctor MacFarlane. He says that any requests that Daniel MacCarthy may have regarding his son's grave should be sent to Arbuthnot & Co [bank], Madras. He says that Henry's estate will have to be managed according to military law and regulations, but that he has kept a few items he "thought it might be gratifying to his father to receive [such as] ... the Chinese things Rico had collected to bring home with him to England ..." He also notes that they have sent Rico's "dog and a favourite bird to Colonel Simpson ..." He says that Rico was buried in the Roman Catholic Cemetery in Madras with full military honours on Sunday evening. File includes 3 copies of the letter. Also included is a note from Gosling listing some of Rico's personal items "which I will send home by the first opportunity ..."
