Simpson expresses his dismay at missing Daniel's visit to Boulogne [Boulogne-sur-Mer, France], promises to get Daniel's book, and mentions the publication of his own recent book on Edmund Campion. The letter is simply dated 30 October with no year recorded.

"January 5th" is simply recorded as the date of the letter but it is likely to date to 1876 or later as Stawell thanks Daniel for sending his book, 'A Historical Pedigree of the Sliochd Feidhlimidh, the MacCarthys of Gleannacroim', and this was published in 1875. Stawell says that he is due to travel to Kilbrittain [Kilbrittain Castle, County Cork] soon, and mentions Daniel's "pleasant visit here the other day."
