Scope and Content: Letter appears to be written by [?Elizabeth Moffat Prince] Popham, Daniel MacCarthy's mother-in- law. Elizabeth says that it comforts her greatly to know that [?Daniel] will visit her just after the visit of "Flo" [Florence Strachan MacCarthy]. She tells [?Daniel] that he can look for the "said papers" when he visits. She encloses a document [included] which she says will "be as safe with you as with me ..." She notes that she has not received a letter from Clara [likely her daughter-in-law, Clara Pauncefote Popham], and says she is very anxious to hear "what she knows of Harcourt" [likely, Clara's son, Harcourt Francis Pauncefote Popham]. The date of the letter is simply recorded as 31 October. The enclosed document is a statement written by [?Elizabeth] addressed to her [?executor], that Daniel is no longer required to pay the interest on a loan of £500 which she gave to him. The statement is dated 31 [?October] 1864 in Bath [UK].

Two letters written on the same single physical letter; both letters are undated. The letter from Clara is incomplete, with the first two pages torn off. She notes that William [likely her husband, Admiral William Garnock Popham] is writing to Brunswick Popham, and that "Mr McCarthy" [likely Daniel MacCarthy] is with him, and "they are talking the matter over." The "matter" appears to relate to inheritance of the Popham estate. In the copy letter, [?Stachen Irving Popham] writes to Brunswick Popham that "like you, I am willing to renounce all claim to the estate." Strachan notes that he has shared these details with "McCarthy" [likely Daniel MacCarthy]. He also notes "that there are 6 Parkers, 4 Pakenhams and 2 McCarthys [sic] now alive, and none of them in affluent circumstances."
