Scope and Content: O'Donnavan regrets that their "dear friend Dr [John] O'Donovan had not the opportunity while on the Ordnance Survey of visiting Cork & Kerry ..." Suggests setting up a "'corresponding genealogical society'" with secretaries in London, Dublin and Edinburgh to exchange information about pedigrees.

Scope and Content: O'Donnavan discusses various pedigrees and notes that there have been many instances of the "descendants of an elder branch falling into obscurity in Irish history." Mentions "the Chichester House List of the claims on fortified estates in 1702", noting that there are several copies "in this town" and that the copy "at the King's Inns is the best", suggesting that O'Donovan is possibly writing from Dublin.

O'Donnavan offers Daniel his congratulations on the publication of 'The Life and Letters of Florence MacCarthy Reagh ...', and says that he would be most grateful if Daniel could send him a copy. He asks Daniel if he ever traced the Austrian line of MacCarthy Mor Riabach past 1770. The letter ends with O'Donnavan saying that he has been attending the Eisteddfod for the last week.
