Scope and Content: Randal asks for the name of the publisher of Daniel's book, 'The Life and Letters of Florence MacCarthy Reagh' so he can get a copy, and says that there "is none of the race so worthy of the crown" of chieftain than Daniel, as he has "done so much to rescue the name from oblivion ..."

Scope and Content: Randal addresses his letter to "Daniel MacCarthy Esquire, more properly, Prince of Carbery". He thanks Daniel for sending him a copy of 'The Life and Letters of Florence MacCarthy Reagh', adding that Daniel has "given a most interesting account of the glories of our ancestors."

Scope and Content: Randal outlines his pedigree and says that Eugene McFinnan was his father. He says he is looking forward to the release of Daniel's "new work" [?'A Historical Pedigree of the Sliochd Feidhlimidh, the MacCarthys of Gleannacroim'] and notes that genealogy, of all writing, "is the most tedious, and least cared for, except among the families concerned". He supports the restoration of the MacCarthy chieftainship and suggests that Daniel contacts the heads of the other Irish septs. He also discusses the Irish language and says that Daniel "will find some difficulty in mastering it."

Scope and Content: Randal says he has just left Derry, where Daniel's last letter was forwarded to. He sends Daniel a copy of the 'Record' which includes an account of "Blessed Thaddeus McCarthy." He says that he presented a copy of Daniel's book 'A Historical Pedigree of the Sliochd Feidhlimidh, the MacCarthys of Gleannacroim' to a "Captain Campbell of the Highlands, interested in antiquarian lore."
