Daniel MacCarthy Glas Collection- Descriptive List

Descriptive list of the Daniel MacCarthy (Glas) Collection

JJ writes that he has discussed his ideas on how to elect a chieftain with Denis Florence MacCarthy, and outlines the procedure in his letter to Daniel. He encloses a letter from the Bishop of Kerry [included is the copy letter created by Daniel; the original was likely returned to JJ MacCarthy], in which the bishop lists the names of several MacCarthy priests in his diocese. JJ says he will also contact John Joyce MacCarthy, a solicitor in Cork, and has discussed their project to elect a chieftain with the Earl of Granard [?George Forbes, 7th Earl of Granard]. He adds that he would be glad to see George T Macartney when he is in Dublin.

JJ thinks that the MacCarthy members of the clergy "will give us great and valuable assistance. They are the best interpreters of the feelings of the rural populations and have much influence over them." But he adds that he "would not like the movement [to elect a MacCarthy chieftain] to have an exclusively ecclesiastical aspect ... we must take some steps to interest as many laymen as possible ..." He says he will visit his friend reverend [Daniel] MacCarthy "son of the MacCarthy Fineen" in Maynooth and "learn his feelings and opinion."
