In a dictated letter from his sickbed, Eugene writes that he is very ill, destitute, and has received the last sacraments. He asks Daniel to send some remittance, and hopes to meet him in the next world.

Twomey writes to Daniel to say that Eugene MacCarthy died on 20 December and was in a destitute manner upon his death. He tells Daniel that Eugene died a most edifying death, that Daniel was most good to send him a remittance annually and that he, Reverend Twomey, knew Eugene for over 20 years.

Scope and Content: Letters and drawings documenting Florence's time working as a farmer in Pietermaritzburg, Natal [KwaZulu-Natal], South Africa sent to his father, brother and grandmother. The letters detail his journey from England to South Africa and his struggles to make a living in partnership with William [?Jeans]. Florence ended the partnership in December 1862, and it appears that he decided to return to England in February 1863. File includes a single letter from William [?Jeans] dated 15 July 1862 which gives an insight into Florence's struggles with his new life as a farmer: "... it is quite a mistake for young men brought up amidst the comforts of civilized life to think of making a fortune farming in Natal."
