Daniel MacCarthy Glas Collection- Descriptive List

Descriptive list of the Daniel MacCarthy (Glas) Collection

Eugene recalls an old saying in Irish which he translates as "if it be Glas, it is not inhospitable." He says that there are no "rising generations" of the Shuldhams: there are two remaining sons, Edmund, who is a major in the South Cork Militia, and Leopold who acts as Edmund's agent. There is one remaining daughter who is married to Lord Carbery. Eugene speculates that as Lord Carbery is a mute, the Shuldham daughter most likely only married him for the title. Eugene recounts a Mrs Richardson of Dunmanway, how few MacCarthy Derraghs there are left and how the Shuldhams have never accepted them as being true MacCarthys. The letter ends with Eugene speaking of the death of Father Hurley and his delight at Daniel's completion of his work [?'A Historical Pedigree of the Sliochd Feidhlimidh, the MacCarthys of Gleannacroim'].

Scope and Content: Eugene writes that he takes much delight in reading the preface to Daniel's book, that he is entering his seventieth year, and that he can recollect conversations between his father and Father Collins regarding the eloquence of Richard Lalor and the MacCarthys of Spring-mount. The letter ends with Eugene earnestly hoping that the MacCarthys of Ireland will shake off their lethargy and yearn more deeply for the restoration of the title of MacCarthy Mor. He asks for Daniel's consent in sending the preface to Edmond Shuldham.
